Christopher Glenn

A reporter for CBS Radio News for 35 years, Glenn covered pretty much everything, including a first-hand report of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. But one part of his career stands out above the rest: his show In the News, which debuted in 1971, was a 2-1/2 minute explanation of a current news story to children. The show was on TV, and he didn't appear on camera. Rather, Glenn was there in a distinctive and calm voice-over, showing clips that kids may have seen while parents were watching the news, and putting them into the context of their world so they could better understand what was going on around them. Glenn did over 5,000 In the News segments, sneaking a little bit of quality learning into kid shows like cartoons. He then went on to anchor The World Tonight -- CBS's late news -- for 11 years, and retired in February 2006. He was awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast of 2005, and will be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in November. Glenn died October 17 from liver cancer at 68.
