In the late 1940s, with a child to support, Gee, who had trained as an artist, turned to photo retouching as a career. It was the golden age of photo magazines such as Life and Look, and she was good: she did very well. In the 1950s she went to a photography exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art, which made her realize the artistic potential of photographs. Some galleries had tried to sell photos as art before, including those by Alfred Stieglitz and Julien Levy, but failed. She still took a chance and opened her own gallery, called Limelite, in 1954, and it did well, which helped to establish photography as marketable fine art. She sold work by now-notable photographers such as Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, but it wasn't until the 1990s that photography as an art form really took off. She died October 10 in a Manhattan hospice. She was 85.

The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooter...
By: Joe McNally
List Price: $54.99
Amazon Price: $32.99
Editorial Review:
THE FIRST BOOK WITH ONE FOOT ON THE COFFEE TABLE, AND ONE FOOT IN THE
CLASSROOM
Joe McNally, one of the world?s top pro digital photographers, whose celebrated work has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Time, and National Geographic (to name a few), breaks new ground by doing something no photography book has ever done?blending the rich, stunning images and elegant layout of a coffee-table book with the invaluable training, no-nonsense insights, and photography secrets usually found only in those rare, best-of-breed educational books.
When Joe?s not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he?s in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to ?get the shot? at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe?s sessions to life.
What makes the book so unique is the ?triangle of learning? where (1) Joe distills the concept down to one brief sentence. It usually starts with something like, ?An editor at National Geographic once told me?? and then he shares one of those hard-earned tricks of the trade that you only get from spending a lifetime behind the lens. Then, (2) on the facing page is one of Joe?s brilliant images that perfectly illustrates the technique (you?ll recognize many of his photos from magazine covers). And (3) you get the inside story of how that shot was taken, including which equipment he used (lens, f/stop, lighting, accessories, etc.), along with the challenges that type of project brings, and how to set up a shot like that of your own.
This book also gives you something more. It inspires. It challenges. It informs. But perhaps most importantly, it will help you understand photography and the art of making great photos at a level you never thought possible. This book is packed with those ?Ah ha!? moments?those clever insights that make it all come together for you. It brings you that wonderful moment when it suddenly all makes sense?that ?moment it clicks.?
The Big Penis Book
List Price: $59.99
Amazon Price: $43.79
Editorial Review:
When it comes to pleasure, size doesn't matter; as we all know it s quality, not quantity, that counts. But let's admit it: a big penis is undeniably compelling. Big shoulders, big lapels, and big hair may come and go, but the big penis never goes out of fashion. With those possessing more than 8 inches (20 cm) making up less than 2% of the world's population, this rare accessory will always fascinate.
In The Big Penis Book we explore the centuries-old fascination with the large phallus, a fascination common to men and women alike. This hefty book is profusely illustrated with over 400 historic photos of spectacular male endowments, including rare photos of the legendary John Holmes. The majority of the photographs are from the 1970s, when the sexual revolution first freed photographers to depict the male entirely nude. Photographers include Bob Mizer of Athletic Model Guild, David Hurles of Old Reliable, Colt, Falcon, Sierra Domino, Third World, and Champion Studios, with each of these iconic photographers interviewed or profiled, along with information about each of their models. And if this isn t enough, the book closes with a special surprise comparable to the Guinness Book of Records Norma Stitz featured in The Big Book of Breasts! Can you guess what body part Dian is dissecting next?

Peter Beard
List Price: $100.00
Amazon Price: $63.00
Editorial Review:
Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon, painted on by Salvador DalÃ?Â, and made diaries with Andy Warhol; he toured with Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones, created books with Jacqueline Onassis and Mick Jagger all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took Vogue stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones most notably Iman back to the U.S. with him.
His love affair with natural history and wildlife, which informs most of his work, began when he was a teenager. He had read the books of Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and after spending time in Kenya and befriending the author, bought a piece of land near hers. It was the early 1960s and the big game hunters led safaris, with all the colonial elements Beard had read about in Out of Africa characterizing the open life and landscape, but the times were changing. Beard witnessed the dawn of Kenya`s population explosion, which challenged finite resources and stressed animal populations including the starving elephants of Tsavo, dying by the tens of thousands in a wasteland of eaten trees. So he documented what he saw with diaries, photographs, and collages. He went against the wind in publishing unique and sometimes shocking books of these works. The corpses were laid bare; the facts were carefully written down sometimes in type, often by hand, occasionally with blood.
Peter Beard's most important collages are included, along with hundreds of smaller-scale works and diaries, magnified to show every detail from Beard's meticulous handwriting and old-master-inspired drawings to stones and bones and bits of animals pasted to the page.
Special features:
Two volumes in a cloth slipcase
Volume 1 (PB1): 200 pages of diaries and 294 pages of collages + 5 fold-out; original essay by photo critic Owen Edwards. Nearly all the diaries and collages from the original book are included, plus two new collages finished in 2007.
Volume 2 (PB2): Image index with captions for all pictures from Volume 1, personal photos and early work of the artist, interview with the artist by Steven M. L. Aronson, a facsimile reprint of Beard s 1993 handwritten essay from the sold-out first issue of Blind Spot magazine, extensive bibliography, filmography, and a list of exhibitions.
Originally published in 2006 in TASCHEN's Collector's Edition series, the book sold out instantly upon publication and earned accolades from publications the world over. The book you couldn't get your hands on is finally available in bookstores everywhere, and at a nice price!
