Hideo Shima

Shima, who developed Japan's Shinkansen -- the "bullet train" -- which began service at 138 mph in October, 1964 (the current generation reaches 169 mph). Shima was later the head of Japan's National Space Development Agency, and was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1994. He died March 18 at 96.
