Martin Tytell

Tytell was a typewriter repairman and expert -- that's it. But in his 70-year career, which ended on his retirement in 2000, Tytell was so influential that when he once made a mistake on a typewriter that was set up for Burmese (he accidentally inserted the slug for one character upside down), the mistake became standard -- even in Burma (now Myanmar). His Manhattan shop, where he advertised "Psychoanalysis for Your Typewriter", was frequented by writers like Dorothy Parker, newsmen like David Brinkley, and politicians like Dwight D. Eisenhower. Mail addressed simply to "Mr. Typewriter, New York" were delivered to him. When a museum curator needed a hieroglyphics typewriter, Tytell was able to build it. Tytell even invented a reverse carriage for languages that read from right to left. Tytell started early: he got the contract to service the typewriters in a hospital before he even graduated from high school. In 1943, The Office of Strategic Services asked him to convert a batch of 100 machines to type in 17 different languages. When he was done, they were airdropped to O.S.S. units along the front lines. "I'm 83 years old and I just signed a 10-year lease on this office," he said in 1997. "I'm an optimist, obviously." As for typewriters themselves, "I hope they do survive," he said. "Manual typewriters are where my heart is. They're what keep me alive." Some do survive, but Tytell died September 11 from cancer. He was 94.

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
By: Doreen Cronin
List Price: $16.99
Amazon Price: $11.55
Editorial Review:

Farmer Brown
has a problem.
His cows like to type.
All day long he hears

Click, clack, MOO.
Click, clack, MOO.
Clickety, clack, MOO.

But Farmer Brown's problems REALLY begin when his cows start leaving him notes....

Doreen Cronin's understated text and Betsy Lewin's expressive illustrations make the most of this hilarious situation. Come join the fun as a bunch of literate cows turn Farmer Brown's farm upside down. The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious:

Dear Farmer Brown,
The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets.
Sincerely,
The Cows

When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor, beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet!

This hilarious tale will give young rebels-in-the-making a taste of the power of peaceful protest and the satisfaction of cooperative give and take. Witty watercolors by award-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin (Snake Alley Band, Araminta's Paint Box) will make this a favorite for one and all, even if words such as "ultimatum" and "neutral" throw the younger set. Mac is not a typewriter, The (2nd Edition)
By: Robin Williams
List Price: $14.99
Amazon Price: $10.19
Editorial Review:
One of the most popular Macintosh books ever written, The Mac is not a typewriter has been called the "Strunk and White of typography." Best-selling author Robin Williams's simple, logical principles for using type to produce beautiful, professional documents are as true now as they were when the original edition was published in 1989. This updated edition includes new examples and expanded information dedicated to the practical advice that made the first edition an enduring bestseller. Throughout, Robin shows you the small details that separate the pros from the amateurs: typographer versus typewriter quotation marks, en and em dashes, tabs and indents, kerning, leading, white space, widows and orphans, and hanging punctuation. If you prepare documents, you'll find The Mac is not a typewriter, Second Edition an indispensable guide. And those who read your documents will recognize the work of a pro, even if they don't know a curly quote from curly fries.

Gramophone, Film, Typewriter (Writing Science)
By: Friedrich A. Kittler
List Price: $26.95
Amazon Price: $24.25
Editorial Review:
Part technological history of the emergent new media in the late nineteenth century, past theoretical discussion of the responses to these media - including texts by Rilke, Kafka, and Heidegger, as well as elaborations by Edison, Bell, Turing, and other innovators - Gramphone, Film, Typewriter analyzes this momentous shift using insights from the work of Foucault, Lacan, and McLuhan. Fusing discourse analysis, structuralist psychoanalysis, and media theory, and the author adds a vital historical dimension to the current debates over the relationship between electronic literacy and poststructuralism, and the extent to which we are constituted by our technologies.

Write Naked
By: Peter Gould
List Price: $16.95
Amazon Price: $12.71
Editorial Review:

Sixteen-year-old Victor, a thoughtful loner who tries to live his life ?under the radar,? wants to test out the saying ?You have to be naked to write.? When he sneaks off with an old Royal typewriter to his uncle?s cabin deep in the Vermont woods and strips off his clothes, he expects Thoreau-like solitude. What he gets is something else?both funny and, as his high school English teacher likes to say, ?transformative.? For he discovers a face in the window watching him?Rose Anna, a homeschooled free spirit with an antique fountain pen and a passion to save the planet. Their unexpected encounter marks the beginning of an inspired writing partnership?and a relationship as timeless and eager as the Vermont woods in spring.

A strikingly original debut novel that introduces two storytellers with different kinds of tales: one?in Victor?s unforgettable voice?a quirky, contemporary love story; the other?by Rose Anna?an ecological fantasy featuring a tiny heroic newt. Together, the teens explore the possibility of connections ? to one another, the woods outside, and the world beyond.
