A manufacturer, Sokolof made millions on his invention of special drywall stripping. But in 1966, at the age of 43, he suffered a massive heart attack. He was shocked: "I was thin. I did exercises every day. I ran a mile every day. My blood pressure was low. I didn't smoke. I knew how to handle stress. I had a wonderful wife and happy marriage." Doctors blamed his high-fat diet: "If it was greasy, I ate it," he once said. His cholesterol was 300. So he founded the National Heart Savers Association and lobbied food companies to turn out healthier fare. His advertising campaigns helped convince fast food companies to make french fries in vegetable oil instead of beef tallow, and successfully lobbied for a new law requiring nutritional labeling on food packaging. Sokolof sold his company in 1992 to work full-time delivering his message, and in 1995 led the campaign to stop calling 2% milk "low fat", paying for $500,000 in advertising to help public awareness out of his own pocket. All told he spent about $15 million to make people aware of the dangers of a high-fat diet. "I'll never retire," he once vowed. "I'll be working until they carry me out feet first." They did: he died April 15 after a sudden illness. He was 82.

Editorial Review:
So many labels, so little time—just tell me what to buy!
If you—like millions of other Americans—still don’t know how to read food labels and are frustrated by the hundreds of nutrition and health claims as well as statements like free-range and grassfed, it’s time to learn what you’re really putting into your body…find out how to select the most healthy foods at the supermarket and still get dinner on the table by 6:00 pm with EATING BETWEEN THE LINES
Shopping is no longer as simple as deciding what’s for dinner. Food labels like “organic,” “natural,” “low carb,” and “fat free!” scream out at you from every aisle at the supermarket. Some claims are certified by authoritative groups such as the FDA and USDA, but much of our country’s nutrition information is simply a marketing ploy. If you want to know what food labels really mean—and what they could mean to your health—EATING BETWEEN THE LINES will explain why:
--Chickens labeled “free range” may never actually see daylight
--Organic seafood may be a misnomer.
--The words “hormone-free” on pork, eggs and poultry is meaningless
--“Low fat” cookies and “heart-healthy” cereals may contain heart damaging trans-fatty acids
…and more. Organized by supermarket section, from the vegetable aisle to the dairy case, EATING BETWEEN THE LINES also features more than seventy actual food labels and detachable shopping lists for your convenience—and to help bring the best food to the table for you and your family.

Labeling Genetically Modified Food: The Philosophical and Legal Debate
List Price: $65.00
Amazon Price: $60.80
Editorial Review:
Food products with genetically modified (GM) ingredients are common, yet many consumers are unaware of this. When polled, consumers say that they want to know whether their food contains GM ingredients, just as many want to know whether their food is natural or organic. Informing consumers is a major motivation for labeling. But labeling need not be mandatory. Consumers who want GM-free products will pay a premium to support voluntary labeling.
Why do consumers want to know about GM ingredients? GM foods are tested to ensure safety and have been on the market for more than a decade. Still, many consumers, including some with food allergies, want to be cautious. Also, GM crops may affect neighboring plants through pollen drift. Despite tests for environmental impact, some consumers may worry that GM crops will adversely effect the environment. The study of risk and its management raises questions not settled by the life sciences alone.
This book surveys various labeling policies and the cases for them. It is the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment of the debate about labeling genetically modified food. The contributors include philosophers, bioethicists, food and agricultural scientists, attorneys/legal scholars, and economists.
