When JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby, the minister that was to perform Oswald's funeral service didn't show up. Saunders had not preached from a pulpit in years. Still, when the funeral director asked Saunders at the last minute to step in, Saunders agreed. He later said "even Lee Harvey Oswald deserved a Christian burial." Rev.
