Roy Huggins

As a writer and TV producer, Huggins created some of the most memorable TV shows of all time: Maverick (1957-1962), 77 Sunset Strip (1958-1964), The Fugitive (1963-1967) and The Rockford Files (1974-1980). Plus many others that are not so well known -- he wrote at least 350 TV and movie scripts. In 1961 an episode of his series Bus Stop dealt with a psychopathic killer; around the same time, Federal Communications Commission chairman criticized TV as "a vast wasteland", and Bus Stop was held up as an example. In response, Huggins wrote that "The public arts are created for a mass audience and for a profit; that is their essential nature. But they can at times achieve truth and beauty, and given freedom they will achieve it more and more often." And he went on to prove that before he died, on April 5 in Santa Monica, Calif., at 87.

White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s
By: Joe Boyd
List Price: $18.00
Amazon Price: $12.63
Editorial Review:

"This is the best book about music I've read in years, and a gripping piece of social history."-Brian Eno

When Muddy Waters came to London at the start of the 1960s, a kid from Boston called Joe Boyd was his tour manager; when Dylan went electric at the Newport Festival, Joe Boyd was plugging in his guitar; when the summer of love got going, Joe Boyd was running UFO, the coolest club in London; when a bunch of club regulars called Pink Floyd recorded their first single, Joe Boyd was the producer; when a young songwriter named Nick Drake wanted to give his demo tape to someone, he chose Joe Boyd.

More than any previous sixties music autobiography, Joe Boyd's White Bicycles offers the real story of what it was like to be there at the time. As well as the sixties heavy-hitters, this book also offers wonderfully vivid portraits of a whole host of other musicians: everyone from the great jazzman Coleman Hawkins to the folk diva Sandy Denny, Lonnie Johnson to Eric Clapton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Fairport Convention.

Record and film producer Joe Boyd was born in Boston in 1942 and graduated from Harvard in 1964. He went on to produce Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, R.E.M., and many others. He produced the documentary Jimi Hendrix and the film Scandal. In 1980 he started Hannibal Records and ran it for twenty years. He lives in London.

Groove Tube: Sixties Television and the Youth Rebellion (Console-ing Passions)
By: Aniko Bodroghkozy
List Price: $84.95
Amazon Price: $84.95
Editorial Review:
Critics often claim that prime-time television seemed immune?or even willfully blind?to the landmark upheavals rocking American society during the 1960s. Groove Tube is Aniko Bodroghkozy?s rebuttal of this claim. Filled with entertaining and enlightening discussions of popular shows of the time?such as The Monkees, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Mod Squad?this book challenges the assumption that TV programming failed to consider or engage with the decade?s youth-lead societal changes.
Bodroghkozy argues that, in order to woo an increasingly lucrative baby boomer audience, television had to appeal to the social and political values of a generation of young people who were enmeshed in the hippie counterculture, the antiwar movement, campus protests, urban guerilla action?in general, a culture of rebellion. She takes a close look at the compromises and negotiations that were involved in determining TV content, as well as the ideological difficulties producers and networks faced in attempting to appeal to a youthful cohort so disaffected from dominant institutions. While programs that featured narratives about hippies, draft resisters, or revolutionaries are examined under this lens, Groove Tube doesn?t stop there: it also examines how the nation?s rebellious youth responded to these representations. Bodroghkozy explains how, as members of the first ?TV generation,? some made sense of their societal disaffection in part through their childhood experience with this powerful new medium.
Groove Tube will interest sociologists, American historians, students and scholars of television and media studies, and others who want to know more about the 1960s.

This Is a Thriller: An Episode Guide, History and Analysis of the Classic 196...
By: Alan Warren
List Price: $35.00
Amazon Price: $35.00
Editorial Review:
The late 1950s and early 1960s were the golden years of horror television. Anthology series such as Way Out and Great Ghost Tales, along with certain episodes of Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, were among the shows that consistently frightened a generation of television viewers. And perhaps the best of them all was Thriller, hosted by Boris Karloff.

In Thriller the horror was gothic, with a darker, bleaker vision of life than its contemporaries. The show?s origins and troubled history is first discussed here, followed by biographies of such key figures as producer William Frye, executive producer Hubbell Robinson, writers Robert Block and Donald S. Sanford, and Karloff. The episode guide covers all 67 installments, providing airdate, production credits, cast, plot synopses and critical evaluations.
