Suzuki, who died in Matsumoto, Japan, on January 26 at age 99, developed the "Suzuki method" of music instruction in the 1950s with the idea that by listening and imitation, children can learn to speak any language, or play music, by age 3. About 300,000 children a year learn music using his method.
