Randy Cassingham’s Honorary Unsubscribe Recognizes the Unknown, the Forgotten and the Obscure People who Had an Impact on Our Lives

Art designer

Stan Jolley

A Hollywood set designer, in 1953 Jolley got called in for a new job: a nine-month stint to help design something for another studio. The studio was Disney, and the task was to design a new theme park the company was developing, called Disneyland. Jolley-designed attractions included the Golden Horseshoe Saloon, Autopia, the Storybook Land Canal Boats, and the interior of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The design took two and a half years, and once the park was finally open Jolley went on to work on Disney’s movies and TV shows. That included designing the “office” (really a TV studio) where Walt Disney recorded his Walt Disney Presents spots. He left Disney in 1960, but then worked on the iconic “look” of TV shows including Mister Ed, Branded, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Get Smart, and MacGyver. In film, Jolley was the art director or production designer for Taps, Caddyshack, and others. He died June 4 from gastric cancer at a hospice in Southern California. He was 86.
